Downloading old email in bulk (some w/attachments): is this possible for free?

Hi. I’d like to bundle my email (by date or sender, preferably) and back it up at home. I’ve looked through other people’s versions of this question and as of May 2007, it seems the answer is still, basically: sorry, the only way to do this is pay for Yahoo! Plus services. (I don’t use Outlook Express, in case that’s the only way to do it? I couldn’t tell from other answers.) I don’t want to pay for extra service for a once-a-year thing. If I move to gmail, is there a way to forward everything painlessly? Is there a way to export? Or is there really NO free solution to this problem? Running XP w/Firefox or Opera. Thanks for your help, folks!

To download mails on to your computer you need POP access from your email provider and a email client like Outlook Express, Microsoft Office Outlook, Eudora, Opera etc. to download it.
POP service is available only for Yahoo Plus customers though its free on Gmail which means if you move to Gmail, you can get all your new mails downloaded onto the email client. But theres nothing you can do about your old mails in Yahoo.
From your explanation, I understand you dont want to download your mails to the computer daily and assume you need access to your new mails on the webmail (Yahoo or Gmail). In that case, (if you do move to Gmail or go for Yahoo Plus), set your email client in a way that it downloads the mails only when you require. Email clients by default download new mails automatically when you open the program and if you havent set your Gmail (or Yahoo) to keep a copy of the POPed mails, you will not be able to get it back to the webmail.
